12th Seoul Pride Expo

On May 31, 2026, a masterclass held at PRIDE EXPO offered an overview of the long journey of contemporary artist siren eun young jung’s Yeoseong Gukgeuk Project (2008–present), from her recent works to her current solo exhibition in Stuttgart, Germany, resistant theatre.

Throughout the session, the artist looked back on her practice, explaining how she understands and engages with “queer art” and how she has incorporated those perspectives into her work.

siren eun young jung frames approximately 18 years of research on Yeoseong Gukgeuk through what she calls the “Theatre Trilogy”: trans theatre, Deferral theatre, and resistant theatre. She emphasized that the history of Yeoseong Gukgeuk, while appearing to conform to tradition, has also continued to pursue new experiments beyond it. Rather than understanding this history simply as either “conformity” or “subversion,” she described it as a form of “irregular technique,” arguing that this very technique can become a method of “queering.”

The artist believes that the methodology of “irregular technique,” which she learned from Yeoseong Gukgeuk, can become an important way of reinterpreting and transforming our society and world. She explained that resistant theatre is a contemporary interpretation of the Yeoseong Gukgeuk Project grounded in this belief, as well as a form of temporal exploration that revisits history in order to understand its presentness and contemporaneity.

In particular, two major works from resistant theatre, Sick Seoul (2026) and People, Not-Yet Here (2026), examine what is exposed and revealed when queerness intervenes in struggles for political citizenship. Through these works, the artist argues that queerness should not remain limited to questions of sexual orientation or gender identity, but should instead become a way of recognizing what has been hidden, marginalized, and excluded across society, politics, history, and the arts. In this context, she also shared with the audience the idea of “queer grit.”

Given the long history of the project, the presentation itself was extensive, but critic Lee Jin-shill, who joined the session, helped keep the audience oriented throughout the presentation with thoughtful summaries and meaningful questions.
